At Ellesgaard in Almindingen, third-generation farmer Anders Pedersen has achieved a fine balance between the freedom of grazing outdoors and the comfort of staying indoors. This ensures that the cows are well throughout the year. Despite having free access to lush green pastures and fresh air, many cows choose to spend a significant part of their day in the covered open barns. This might seem strange considering the cows’ immediate excitement when let out to pasture. However, cows are herd animals that prefer to stand close together with their friends in safe and familiar surroundings. The proximity to other cows provides them with a sense of peace and security. Additionally, it can quickly become too hot to graze when the sun is high in the sky. The covered barns offer a shady and comfortable refuge with optimal ventilation and easy access to feed and water.
